In an industry that has historically been male-dominated, two pioneering women from Musket Transport’s marketing department, Sophia & Cassia, have taken a bold step forward by pursuing their DZ licenses at the Commercial Heavy Equipment Training (CHET) facility.
This inspiring journey represents more than just personal achievement – it demonstrates the evolving landscape of commercial driver training and its increasing accessibility. Their experience serves as a powerful testament to the growing opportunities for women in the transportation sector, challenging traditional norms and paving the way for greater diversity in the industry. Through their experience, we can showcase how we’re working towards breaking down barriers and how CHET’s comprehensive training programs are creating an inclusive environment where all aspiring drivers can thrive, regardless of gender.
(The journey begins with studying, a medical examination, and a written knowledge examination)
The Journey Begins
The journey to obtaining a DZ license encompasses several essential and carefully structured steps that must be completed in sequence. The process begins with a critical milestone: successfully completing the comprehensive D written examination at an authorized Drive Test centre. This examination serves as the foundation for all subsequent training. For our dedicated marketing professionals embarking on this path, the journey commenced with extensive and methodical preparation. This preparation phase involved in-depth study sessions with the official MTO truck handbook, ensuring a thorough understanding of all theoretical aspects of commercial driving. Additionally, they completed the mandatory medical examinations, which assess physical fitness and ensure candidates meet all health and safety requirements for commercial vehicle operation.
(Air Brake endorsement involves 2 days of theoretical and practical training, and written + practical examinations)
Air Brake Training: Building Confidence
The comprehensive two-day Air Brake training program turned out to be an illuminating and transformative educational experience. Under the expert guidance of instructors like Nasir, who possessed a remarkable ability to transform complex theoretical concepts into easily understandable components, the initially intimidating subject matter gradually evolved into a captivating area of study. The instructors’ methodical approach to breaking down intricate systems and mechanisms helped demystify the technical aspects of air brake operations.
What truly enhanced the learning experience was the highly practical and interactive teaching methodology, which incorporated real equipment components and physical demonstrations. By allowing students to examine and interact with actual air brake parts, the training created a dynamic learning environment that bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This hands-on approach not only made the material more accessible but also significantly improved information retention and understanding, making the entire learning process both practically valuable and intellectually stimulating.

Five Days of Intensive Training
The DZ training program at CHET is structured as an intensive five-day immersive experience, featuring comprehensive hands-on instruction delivered through an exceptional one-on-one student-to-teacher ratio that ensures maximum individual attention. Each student receives personalized training in modern, well-maintained Volvo cabs, which serve as sophisticated mobile classrooms equipped with the latest industry-standard features. This comfortable and professional learning environment enables students to fully focus on mastering essential skills.
The program’s carefully designed structure emphasizes individualized instruction, allowing instructors to adapt their teaching methods to each student’s learning style and pace. Throughout the five days, students engage in extensive practice sessions covering all crucial aspects of commercial driving, progressing systematically from fundamental schedule 1 inspections through to advanced driving maneuvers. This thorough approach ensures that every student receives the detailed guidance and practical experience necessary to develop confidence and competence in their driving abilities.
