You might be wondering what to expect as a new student at CHET. In this article we explore the experiences and insights shared by CHET Operations Manager, Sandra G, to provide a glimpse into what awaits new students.

A CHANGE IN HABITS

As new students embark on their truck driving training, they need to be prepared to make some adjustments to their daily habits. One of the first things they’ll need to make a priority is punctuality. Arriving on time is crucial. It’s also important to prioritize health and make sure students eat before class.

“We just had a student come in here,” recalled Sandra. “He came to class, and he hadn’t had breakfast. By 11:00am, the instructor had to pull him over- he said I feel dizzy, I can’t drive anymore, I haven’t eaten. Students need to make sure to get up extra early, make sure they eat, to prepare for their class time.” Bringing a lunch or snacks for the 10:00 AM break is also a good idea.

Additionally, a new study routine requires a certain amount of positive habit forming. It’s advisable that students study the material taught at CHET every night and practice the pre-trip inspection on their personal vehicles so that it becomes second nature.

COMMITMENT AND LIFESTYLE

Becoming a professional truck driver requires dedication and the ability to adapt to a unique lifestyle. Students should be prepared to spend long hours away from home, even if they choose to work locally. It’s crucial to have the support and understanding of family and friends, as a student’s commitment is essential during training and the subsequent career that follows.

Being comfortable with solitude, having the ability to wake up early, and being physically fit are traits that will serve students well in this profession. Truck driving may also require an adjustment to personal hygiene routines, as access to showers may be limited. It’s important to be self-sufficient and adaptable in this regard.

“I always say you have to be able to live in your own skin,” says Sandra in regards to personal hygiene. “You won’t necessarily be able to shower every night.”

TRAINING STRUCTURE AND CLASSES

At CHET, the training structure is designed to provide comprehensive and effective education. After the Air Brake class, students can expect five days of theory classes, totaling 36 and a half hours. If they opt for manual training, they will receive three lessons (10.5 hours) of simulator training. During this phase, proficiency with manual transmission will be evaluated. Following the completion of the manual training, student then undergo 19 standardized lessons, each lasting 3.5 hours. These lessons prepare students for the ministry road test.

The in-cab student-to-teacher ratio is 1-to-1, ensuring personalized attention and guidance throughout the training. In the classroom, there is one teacher for every 15 students, though class sizes vary.

FUNDING OPTIONS AND IMMIGRATION

There are many funding options available for those looking to pursue truck driving as newcomers or permanent residents. Better Jobs Ontario offers opportunities for career transition, while LendCare provides financial assistance. Additionally, Windmill Microlending supports permanent residents, provincial nominees, Canadian citizens, protected persons, and convention refugees.

Additionally, CHET’s parent company, Musket Transport, offers an annual Female Scholarship, as well as a Ukrainian Scholarship.

It’s worth noting that truck drivers with relevant experience from other countries may have opportunities for Express Entry Immigration.
