In the heart of December, amid temperatures plunging to -18 degrees Celsius, Musket transformed its Southdown facility into a winter wonderland for its inaugural Winter Festival. This festive gathering brought together drivers, vendors, and external partners for a day of celebration, warmth, and community connection.
A Creative Vision Come to Life
What began as a pitch in November by Corporate Communications Officer, Sophia Sniegowski Begidzhanov, quickly evolved into a remarkable event, thanks to the dedication of the “Holiday Haulers” team. In just four short weeks, they orchestrated a complete transformation of the space, featuring custom-made attractions that showcased both creativity and sustainability.
The festival’s centerpiece included three stunning container murals created by artist Troi R (pictured left), who ingeniously used only primary colors to paint an enchanting evergreen forest. Adding to the ambiance was a custom-welded container café and fire pit, expertly crafted by Kirk S, drawing from his professional welding experience in Jamaica.
Sustainable Celebrations
The festival wasn’t just about celebration – it demonstrated Musket’s commitment to sustainability. By repurposing containers deemed unsafe for road use and employing eco-conscious painting techniques, the event aligned perfectly with the company’s ESG goals.
A Day of Warmth Despite the Cold
Despite the challenging weather conditions, the festival drew over 100 attendees who gathered around fire pits and enjoyed BBQ meals in cozy container-turned-dining areas. The container café served as a hub for hot beverages and holiday treats, while custom forest green winter hats were distributed as thoughtful thank-you gifts.
Community Impact
The event’s success was amplified by the generous support of vendors, whose sponsorships not only covered the festival costs but also enabled donations to key charity partners including the Salvation Army, Goodwill Amity, and United Way Halton & Hamilton.
Voices from the Festival
The impact of the festival is best captured through the words of those who attended:
Max Archer, Outreach Coordinator at Goodwill, praised the event’s networking opportunities and attention to detail: “The level of care that went into the winter festival did not go unnoticed. The team at Musket welcomed us with a friendly handshake and a warm drink, and took care of us the entire time we were there. The custom artwork and decorations stoked a festive spirit and the food was hot and hearty – what more could we ask for!”
Musket Driver Karen B expressed heartfelt appreciation: “I honestly cannot thank you or your amazing team for everything you all did to make this event a success. I can hand on my heart say that being with you has been a thoroughly enjoyable day.”
Anthony E from GFL Environmental Inc., a CHET employer partner, commended the team’s resilience: “It was such a nice set up, you guys all did an amazing job. Cold weather and all, nothing was stopping you guys from throwing a party!”
