Starting out as a new truck driver can be overwhelming. We gathered tips and insights from experienced professionals at Musket to help you begin your journey as a successful driver.
From the recruiting process to road safety, we’ve got you covered!
BE OPEN TO NEW EXPERIENCES
Driver Manager Josh delivers some sage advice: “The drivers that ideally do well here at Musket are the ones that are open. […] The more experience you have, the better it is for you as a driver and the more favourably you get looked on by dispatch. They don’t play favourites, but when dispatch has their list of loads, they’re going to think of the dependable drivers first. And you get to be in their mindset as a dependable driver when you’re more open to the roles and the runs that we have.”
LISTEN TO YOUR TRAINER
Listening to your trainer is crucial. They have the experience and knowledge to guide you through the learning process. As Office Manager Melanie advises, “Pay attention to whoever is training you. Try and take as many notes as you can.” By actively listening and taking notes, this will not only make you a safer and more efficient driver, but it will also make you more valuable to the company and increase your chances of success.
BE PATIENT
Truck driving involves a lot of time spent on the road. Naturally, this will mean dealing with other drivers who may not understand the nuances of driving a big rig. As Health & Safety Manager Daryn puts it, “This job is really a lot about patience and about how you behave on the road. You’re going to encounter a lot of people that have no patience at all. A lot of people are frustrated by the big truck that’s in their way.” It’s up to the driver to maintain proper following distances, take their time, and be patient. Rushing never saves time. Being patient is key to ensuring safety for all.
ASK THE STUPID QUESTIONS
Joe, RW Yard Manager, emphasizes the importance of helping new drivers feel comfortable and confident. He encourages drivers to ask any questions they may have, stating “I would rather you ask stupid questions than do stupid things.” Anna, Intermodal Ops Supervisor, seconds this: “Even if it’s five times a day, same question. Ask until you learn.” Joe continues, “We have people for you to contact if you’re not sure. Do not make any decisions on your own. Get good before you get fast.”
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
As a new or established driver, it’s vital to plan ahead. “The best course of action for you is to be efficient in how you do things, and plan before you do,” explains Health & Safety Manager Daryn. “That way you get where you need to be, when you need to be, and have fewer issues along the way.” This includes not cutting corners on pre-trip inspections, which may seem like a waste of time but can save drivers from breakdowns and longer service times on the road.
BE POLITE, COMMUNICATE, AND STAY POSITIVE
Valdo, SDY Terminal Supervisor, emphasizes the importance of building relationships with other staff. “The best way to interact with our crane operators and gate staff is just come in and say hello, how are you,” says Valdo. “Try to get to know them by name, so they can also refer to you by name. Once there’s a friendship and a bond, normally everybody goes out of their way to help each other out.” As a new hire, taking the initiative to be polite and communicate with those around you can go a long way.
Driver Manager Josh adds, “Just remember, everybody is trying to work towards the same goal.” Office Manager Melanie also reinforces the value of being positive: “The best attitude to come in with is an open mind. Be positive and friendly. We’re all here to help.”
Starting out as a new truck driver can be challenging and overwhelming. However, by being open to new experiences, listening to your trainer, asking questions, being patient, and building positive relationships, you can set yourself up for a successful and rewarding career. With the guidance and advice from experienced professionals, you can navigate the ups and downs of the trucking industry and become a successful truck driver.
